Meet Beedie Luminaries recipient, Gabreal Sarnoh, who is currently attending VCC and studying Dental Hygiene. Learn more here.

What is your field of study and why does it interest you?

I am currently taking first year university transfer courses as a prerequisite for dental hygiene. I am interested in this field because I want to help improve peoples lives. Overall, I enjoy interacting with different people and helping the community.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

The best advice that I have been given is to learn from your past; focus on your future and live in the present.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

I would name my autobiography “Learning as I go”, because that is the best way I can describe my life, and no matter what age I am or how much I have accomplished there is always going to be new challenges to face and new things to explore.

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

My personal mantra is to always have faith in yourself.

What was the last experience that made you a better person?

Teaching basketball to children helped me become a better person because I learned how to motivate and encourage kids. it also helped me developed a lot of patience.

What is something you learned in the last week?

I learned about the human nervous system in my anatomy and physiology class, which was really fun.

What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?

People taking action to fight climate change.

Who inspires you and why?

My older sister Princess Sarnoh inspires me because she has taught me how to become a resilient person by overcoming a lot of adversity, while taking care of me, our brother and her son.

What would people be surprised to find out about you?

I think people would be surprised to find out that I am a funny person because I often tend to look very serious.

What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?

The Beedie program provides a lot of opportunities to form connections with different people. This has helped me to develop new friendships and learn a lot about other people’s personal experiences. It also made the transition from high school to college a little bit easier because there is so much support from the Beedie community.
