Emily Chan, a Beedie Luminary and Bachelor of Media Studies student at UBC, is passionate about creativity and hands-on learning in fields like design and film. Guided by the advice, “You have your whole life to worry about your future, remember to live in the moment,” Emily has learned to embrace the present.
What is your field of study and why does it interest you?
I’m in the Bachelor of Media Studies program! I love expressing my creativity and this program allows me to learn hands-on in many creative fields such as design, film, etc.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Throughout high school, I was too focused with my future and forgot to live in the present. My dad always reminds me “You have your whole life ahead of you to worry about your future, remember to live in the moment.”
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
What it’s like being an overthinker.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
Rome wasn’t built in a day.
What was the last experience that made you a better person?
Spending and enjoying a day on my own. It made me realize that I do not always need to go out with people to have a good time and made me stop worrying about how people will view me if I am alone.
What is something you learned in the last week?
I learned how to make sushi!
What’s the coolest trend you see today?
The return of old trends! I love seeing old technology like vinyl and old fashion trends from the 80s coming back and being cool again.
Who inspires you and why?
My older sister Fiona! Despite my long rants about something insignificant, she always listens and teaches me to grow as a person.
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
That I make Youtube videos! I’ve been making them since I was 11!
What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?
The constant support! My day is always made better after getting a call from Margaret.
