“Focus on areas of genuine interest because that will naturally drive you to work harder and excel in those areas.” Meet Annette Saliken, Beedie Luminaries Mentor.
Why did you decide to become a mentor with Beedie Luminaries?
I believe there is no better investment than yourself, and your education is something that you will have forever and nobody can ever take it away from you, so I feel strongly about everyone having an opportunity to invest time and money into their personal education, and I want to support them in that effort.
What was the best advice you were ever given by your mentor?
Focus on areas of genuine interest because that will naturally drive you to work harder and excel in those areas.
What would you tell your 18 year-old self now?
Balance the time and energy you spend on building healthy relationships and achieving work deadlines because they are both important. Sometimes I let my relationships take a back seat to my work.
What are you reading right now?
My mentee and I discovered that we both have writing backgrounds and we both would like to have more arts and culture in our lives to balance our work, so we will be reading each other’s poems and stories and we hope to start an arts and culture spot on the Beedie site where all mentors and mentees can share their original writings, paintings, music, dance, and other artistic works with each other.
