Meet Kaitlin. As a Beedie Luminaries recipient from Cohort 2020, Kaitlin is busy pursuing her Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia. Studying both Science and Biotechnology, Kaitlin shares a little bit more about herself in this article below.
What is your field of study and why does it interest you?
Biotechnology. I am super interested in the intersection between biology and how we can utilize our increasingly better understanding of the world around us to create tools we an use to help others.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
“Always try.” It’s not about being the best or succeeding at everything you do, it’s not even about failing. It’s about giving it your best shot and growing so that you’re ready for the right opportunity when it comes.
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
A constant work in progress – the growth never stops!
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
“You never know.” You can try and predict the future all you want, but you never know until it happens – so do the thing you’re afraid to do.
What was the last experience that made you a better person?
Honestly, first year of university, it really humbles you – in a good way.
What is something you learned in the last week?
I learned that I might be more capable at writing than I thought (and how to make a t-shirt for a stuffed animal).
What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?
People deciding to merge their passions with where they work. Seeing everyone become more cognizant of the fact that work doesn’t have to equate to an unfulfilling life is inspiring.
Who inspires you and why?
All the students I meet. It’s crazy to think that just like me they all have dreams they are working towards, and their guidance has helped me a lot (also my Beedie Luminaries Mentor because she is amazing).
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
That I’m an introvert. I love meeting new people which makes it really difficult.
What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?
Definitely the community, so many wonderful minds working together.
