What does Beedie Luminary Rachel Chleifer have to say about entering post-secondary? “Never be scared to try something…”
Meet Rachel who is a first-year student studying Speech Sciences at UBC.
What program will you be taking in post-secondary and why does it interest you?
Speech Sciences – I love the mix of sciences and arts that this program has.
Tell us a little bit about your background (growing up, going to school, extra-curricular activities, etc.).
I grew up in Quebec and lived there for 15 years until I moved to BC with my family. I love sports like skiing, swimming, and running.
Who inspires you, and why?
Helen Keller. She was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. No matter what obstacles she faced throughout her life, she never gave up! “Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye.” – Helen Keller
What motivates you, and why?
People’s disbelief in me. It gives me strengths and motivation to prove that I am able to achieve my goals and show them how wrong they are.
What are your goals for the upcoming school year?
Staying firm in my beliefs.
What is one thing you learned in high school that you will take with you to post-secondary?
I learned how to be persistent and perseverant, it will be extremely useful in university.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to future Luminaries?
The worst feeling ever is regret. Never be scared to try something, it is better to try and then understand that it wasn’t worth it than afterwards regret that you never did it.
