From First-Year Intern to Supply Chain Consultant: Helen Su on Internship Success

BEEDIE LUMINARIES— When Helen Su started her journey with CBRE as a Research Intern after her first year at Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University, she had no idea how this one opportunity would turn into a future career. Now a Beedie Luminaries alumni, Helen is working full time at Ernst & Young.

After her first year as an intern in the middle of COVID, Helen returned for a second summer as a Marketing Intern, where she had the opportunity to get hands-on experience in commercial real estate. Following this summer, Helen received a part-time offer to continue on with CBRE for an additional 8 months while she completed her degree. Seeing how supply chain challenges heavily impacted the industry during this time, Helen felt inspired to learn more and dive in head-first.

Internship and Beyond…

Now a graduate of Simon Fraser University, Helen is now a Supply Chain Consultant at EY, and she attributes her passion for this role to her internship at CBRE.

When asked to reflect on her time with CBRE, Helen proudly explains that CBRE offered mentorship from managers and colleagues (whom she very accurately calls “teammates”), went above and beyond to ensure that she got the best possible experience as an intern. Furthermore, Helen is undoubtedly grateful for the skillsets and experiences, such as case competitions, that have allowed her to expedite her professional career.

So, why be an intern? According to Helen, it is ultimately life experience and serendipity that allow for opportunity, and internships push you towards just that. For Helen, her internship with CBRE fostered seamless transitions where she would have otherwise stumbled along the way, or been forced to ‘start fresh’. Coupled with this, Helen explains how her willingness to try, and others’ allowance for exploration created opportunities for her to dip her toes into new avenues that she could have ignored or never even seen as an option.
