Janice St. Helene began her career as an elementary school teacher before moving into school leadership as a vice-principal and principal in Vancouver. In 2013, she joined Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Education as a Faculty Associate in the Professional Development Program (PDP), subsequently becoming a Program Coordinator in 2014.
Since 2018, Janice has served in senior leadership roles within SFU’s Faculty of Education, as both Associate Director and Director of Preservice Professional Studies. In these roles, she provides leadership for SFU’s preservice teacher education programs and collaborates closely with school districts, provincial ministries, and professional bodies across British Columbia to support the preparation of future educators.
Throughout her career at SFU, Janice has championed decolonization, anti-racism, and anti-oppression initiatives in teacher education. She is particularly committed to working alongside rural, northern, and Indigenous communities to strengthen access to teacher education and to support culturally responsive and community-engaged approaches to learning.
Drawing on her experience as a classroom teacher, school leader, and university administrator, Janice continues to advocate for innovative, inclusive, and responsive teacher education programs that prepare educators to serve diverse learners and communities across British Columbia.
