In today’s edition of the ongoing meet-and-greet of Beedie Luminaries, we are proud to introduce Alancia Jeffery. Alancia is starting her first year at UBC, taking a Bachelor of Arts program. Read more about her story in the Q&A story below.

What post-secondary school will you be attending?
The University of British Columbia
What program will you be taking in post-secondary and why does it interest you?
I am taking a Bachelor of Arts to expand my knowledge in the various disciplines offered at UBC. I am passionate about athletics, health, business, law, and communication.
Tell us a little bit about your background (growing up, going to school, extra-curricular activities, etc.).
I was taught that school is my job so I have always organized my time to maintain good grades. By doing this, I have had the opportunity to participate in many sports over the years. I have spent many hours a week participating on school, club and provincial sports teams which has challenged my mind and body. Sports have offered me the chance to travel, meet new people, and develop friendships. I have been part of the leadership team through my schools and participated in many events over the years to enhance the culture of my schools. As the captain of both the basketball and rugby teams at my high school, I developed my leadership skills and actively engaged with my coaches and teammates.
Who inspires you, and why?
My mom is the most hardworking and intelligent person I know. She has done so much for me from driving me back and forth to practices to making sure that I had everything I needed to succeed. This has inspired me to follow my dreams and persevere in life. In addition, my coaches have inspired me to never give up and that hard work and helping others is mandatory for success.
What motivates you, and why?
My desire to keep learning and expanding my knowledge in areas I don’t know much about motivates me to keep learning and to keep having an open mind. It is very important to me to be a role model as I enjoy helping others succeed.
What are your goals for the upcoming school year?
To maintain high grades, to take part in school and athletic opportunities, to give back to my community, the Beedie Group and UBC itself, meet new people and to enjoy every moment of it.
What is one thing you learned in high school that you will take with you to post-secondary?
To maintain an organized schedule so I can plan my priorities and make the most of my time.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to future Luminaries?
Try new things and take opportunities outside your comfort zone. This helps you meet new people and discover your strengths. Additionally, understanding your strengths and weaknesses allows you to grow and eventually give back as a mentor.
