“Focus on what interests you and makes you curious.” Meet Beedie Luminary Mentor, Kerry Brock
Work Title / Company:
President, GuardRFID Solutions Inc.
Why did you decide to become a mentor with Beedie Luminaries?
My good friend Martina asked me to join the program. I was excited to be part of the first cohort and I hoped I could support someone and make an impact. I wanted to be involved because it was a unique program and I think it will leave a legacy of people that are now part of a community.
What was your favourite subject in school?
Phys Ed.
What was your first job? What was your biggest takeaway from that experience?
My first job as a lifeguard in the summer. I loved being outside all day and working with people. It was hard work and a lot of responsibility. When I look back on it now it was such a good learning experience because it had many leadership elements to the role. We were responsible for pool maintenance and had to be there at 6am. We were instructors, teaching swimming lessons in the mornings, then we had to coach a team. I was the girls waterpolo coach and had to be on a team as well. You also had shifts as the lifeguard responsible for first aid and people’s safety. Finally, you had to participate in events and deal with the public and members of the pool. We literally lived at the pool. We probably worked 60-70 hours a week and loved it.
What are the three qualities that got you where you are today?
- Authenticity- it is best to be yourself and stay true to your values.
- Accountability-do what you said you would do and take ownership of the outcome
- Sense of humour- I love to make people laugh
What would the title of your autobiography be?
Manual Not Required
What advice would you give to post-secondary students as they prepare to transition into the working world?
Focus on what interests you and makes you curious. Finding a purpose and a passion for something will make work and your career far more successful and lead to a healthier life.
What / where is your happy place?
First and foremost, my happy place is with family & friends and if we can be on, in or looking at water than I am most happy.
