Aidan Metz from Cohort 2020 is one our students at the University of Victoria studying Engineering. Read more about Aidan here.
What is your field of study and why does it interest you?
I am currently enrolled in general engineering hoping to get into mechanical in the fall. I’ve always liked solving problems by working with my hands and machines which sparked my interest in the engineering field.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
I think that the best piece of advice I have received is to look at things from a different perspective. It’s frequent that I get caught up in my own head so trying to put myself in someone else’s shoes or in the position of an impartial onlooker helps me clear my thoughts.
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
If I were to write an autobiography today I would call it “Learning to Learn”.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
I like to say “This too shall pass” to myself because it is something that my mom used to say to me as a kid when I was upset. It helps me refocus.
What was the last experience that made you a better person?
I recently got the chance to meet up outside with some friends and play music together. I like to think that the small experiences like these make me a more well rounded and overall better person.
What is something you learned in the last week?
This past week I learned all about different techniques to waterproof a shower enclosure as I am renovating one of our bathrooms.
What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?
I think that the coolest trend today is the transition to machines and automation.
Who inspires you and why?
I would say that my parents are the most inspiring people that I have in my life because they lead by example.
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
I live on an island and canoe into town when I want to hang out with friends, shop or go to school.
What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?
I love the community of Beedie Luminaries. I have been able to make a lot of friends with other Luminaries which was perfect considering the online learning this year and extra difficulty associated with meeting people at university.
