From Cohort 2020, Beedie Luminary Avery Chan has always been passionate about all-things-science. Now studying at the University of British Columbia, Avery reflects on his journey and the steps that helped him reach this point. His story is one of curiosity, determination, and a drive to make a difference through scientific knowledge.
What is your field of study and why does it interest you?
I’m studying environmental science! Besides obviously being an important topic right now, I love how many topics it’s connected to, from chemistry to climatology to policy.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Probably something along the lines of “try it once, what’s the worst that can happen?” I’ve always been a pretty anxious person, so it always helps to ease my nerves, and I’ve been led to so many unique opportunities as a result!
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
A Story of Br-avery or a Lack Thereof
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
“One step at a time.” Just reminding myself that no matter how hazy or steep a task might be, I got to take things one bit at a time.
What was the last experience that made you a better person?
My part-time job! Met some of my favourite people in the world, dealt with some of my least favourite people in the world, and all in all learned so much, from small talk skills to a lifetime’s worth of PLU codes.
What is something you learned in the last week?
How to buy, prep, marinate, and store raw meat. I have been trying to learn how to cook for the upcoming year!
What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?
People talking more honestly about mental health! It has broken down so many barriers, both with my generation and my parents’ generation. Great to see that people feel more comfortable now to reach out for help.
Who inspires you and why?
As cheesy as it is, my mom. Moving to a country whose language you don’t speak and working two jobs to survive and start a family is no easy task! Not to mention her grit being a single mom for a long time, while still being able to maintain a smile and a sharp wit, is so incredibly inspiring.
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
I am a huge map nerd. Have a really good sense of direction as a result though!
What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?
The people! You can never find a more supportive community than this, and there is a little something that works for everyone! So nice to be going through the tough journey that is university, knowing that people have got my back and I got theirs. Would not have done well this past year without everyone!
