Meet Christina Lam. This 2020 student will be starting her studies at Simon Fraser University in undeclared sciences. While Christina explores her options, she has her eyes set and steady on a future as a doctor. Read more about Christina down below.
What program will you be taking in post-secondary and why does it interest you?
I will be attending Simon Fraser University, and am enrolled in an undeclared science major to begin my academic journey. I want to keep my options open as to where I’d like to go with my degree, but I have always loved all the sciences (and, well, pretty much every other subject, too). Additionally, I believe there’s so much potential in the science field in terms of new research and learning opportunities, as well as the directions somebody can pursue after completing this program.
Tell us a little bit about your background (growing up, going to school, extra-curricular activities, etc.).
I was born here in B.C. and have lived here my whole life! Academics and extracurricular have always been a major part of my life. When I was younger, I learned piano and participated in recreational programs such as gymnastics and martial arts. Towards entering high school, I began to volunteer much more, providing community service and taking on leadership roles. It has been such a rewarding experience and I have met many wonderful people over the years.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A doctor.
What was your senior quote in high school?
“Success is a journey, not a destination.” — Arthur Ashe.
What are you looking forward to in your freshman year?
I’m looking forward to meeting new people, learning more about myself, and especially expanding my horizons by taking on new opportunities. It’s amazing how much one can grow in different environments and I think that post-secondary is a great place to gain not only knowledge, but also skills and habits that will stay with us throughout our lives and help us be successful.
Who would you have dinner with if you could have it with any person, living or dead?
My paternal grandfather, whom I never had a chance to meet.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
You are the one who decides how bright the light inside you should shine.
What was the last book you read?
The last book I have been reading is War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. It’s quite a large book though, so I’m still working on it!
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
People may be surprised to learn that my favourite season is winter–except when it snows in dangerous amounts!
