Say “hi” to Joanna Luo from Cohort 2020 of the Beedie Luminaries Scholarship program. Learn more about this University of British Columbia student below.

What is your field of study and why does it interest you?

I am a commerce student at UBC Sauder. I chose business because I wanted to incorporate my passion for fashion design, media communication, and strategical marketing within my future career path.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

The best piece of advice I received is to ‘make your dream your own’. Although you may be walking on the same career path as someone else, aimlessly following their dream will lead you to a dead end. Stop comparing yourself with others and find what truly makes you happy!

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

The Not-So-Average life of an Average Girl.

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

Work smarter, not harder.

What was the last experience that made you a better person?

In my free time, I like to mentor high school students and help them with their English classes. Sometimes it can be very challenging, but in the end, it is very rewarding. When a student gains more confidence in their abilities, I feel like a better person.

What is something you learned in the last week?

There is nothing more unpredictable than change. So much can happen within a minute!

What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?

Platform shoes! They were super in style during the 70s and the 90s, and now they’ve made their way back into the fashion scene. Personally, I think they’re more than a fashion statement—they represent confidence and authenticity.

Who inspires you and why?

My parents inspire me to work hard and to accept failure as the first step to success. They had their fair share of challenges and triumphs as immigrants, and I respect them so much for their achievements.

What would people be surprised to find out about you?

People often find me intimidating upon first impressions, but after getting to know me more they are often surprised at how goofy I am.

What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?

My favorite thing about Beedie Luminaries is the unconditional support from the entire community. Whether it be the staff or the luminaries, everyone has been so welcoming and inspiring.
