Misbah Memon from Cohort 2020 of the Beedie Luminaries Scholarship program is studying Applied Science at Simon Fraser University. Read more about Misbah below.
What is your field of study and why does it interest you?
As a kid I enjoyed learning about how we can save the planet and the little acts we were often taught at school to do as well. What I love about my program is how it takes those small ideas to a practical level. It involves the development of solutions for climate change, transmissions, and energy consumption, as well as looking at it through economic, environmental, societal, and cultural implications, which to me was and is a total game-changer!
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Give everything your best and you’ll see how everything comes together.
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
“Buzzing through Misbah’s Life”
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
“Go with the flow.” It’s simple and something that keeps me going because no matter how much you try to control your life, there are things that will be out of your control. So simply take them as they come and enjoy life!
What was the last experience that made you a better person?
Going to Vancouver Island over the summer for a couple days with family and friends. With a stressful year where I was working and studying non-stop, this trip was a great way to relax. It made me realize that no matter how busy we get, spending quality time with family and friends or just taking a break is so important. This trip was the highlight of my summer, taught me to be grateful for everything I have and spare some time to have fun!
What is something you learned in the last week?
It’s crazy but insightful at the same to see what a small world we live in!
What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?
The way the topic of Mental Health is being spread and becoming something people are caring about. This is incredibly eye opening to see how this topic has been on the rise especially in the last 2 years!
Who inspires you and why?
I have many people that are inspirations, but for this one I’ll say my dad. He’s one of my biggest supporters, but no matter what he may be going through, his positivity is probably one of the essential qualities that has me where I am today. And I can’t be more thankful to have someone like him in my life.
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
My hobbies include acrylic painting, specifically making Arabic calligraphy pieces, and photography!
What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?
Beedie Luminaries has made me believe in myself and gain self confidence that I can accomplish my dreams. It has allowed me to be a part of such an amazing group of students who are willing to help and be there for one another, which is truly heart-warming and inspiring.
