Nina Rogers, a Kinesiology student at UBC, is deeply fascinated by how the body works in harmony to create movement. She lives by the advice to focus on what she can control, helping her manage stress and pursue her goals. Inspired by her community and best friends, Nina is passionate about learning from others and finding strength through life’s challenges, always believing that “the grass gets greener.”
What is your field of study and why does it interest you?
My field of study is Kinesiology. I have always been captivated by the body and how everything works together in order to create one movement.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is to only worry about what you can do. It’s easy to think about how other people can accomplish so much or how the test questions were so difficult but those are all things out of your control. If you only worry about the things that you can control, your life will feel much less stressful because you’ll have known you did everything you could.
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
My autobiography would definitely be named “the grass gets greener”. Throughout my life, there has always been times of struggle or stress where I think nothing will go right for me. However I’ve always been proven wrong.
What was the last experience that made you a better person?
The last experience that made me a better person is probably my job. I work as a barista and being able to learn about different people’s stories and adventures has truly been a gift. It puts the world into perspective when you hear about all of these different lives and how they all happened to come to order a simple coffee from me.
What is something you learned in the last week?
I’ve been learning about how important it is to take a break. Sometimes students can get so caught up with school, especially with exams. It’s really important to take a breather after exerting so much mental and physical energy towards studying so that your body can recoup before the next round.
What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?
I think an important issue right now is reconciliation. Although it has always been a topic of discussion I feel like we are finally just starting to really dig into how we can change and what we did that has created such a daunting environment for Indigenous peoples. The silenced won’t be silent anymore.
Who inspires you and why?
My two best friends, Haley and Sarah, are probably my biggest inspirations. They have always been by my side through everything and anything. They motivate me, push me to go out of my comfort zone, and most of all they have become family to me. I owe so much to them and will be forever grateful for their support and love.
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
People would be surprised to know how much I love time alone. I think that I come off as a very extroverted, outgoing, friendly person, which I am, but I also love to take some time by myself to finish up little tasks or take a breath from the busy world I live in.
What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?
My favourite part about being a Luminary has to be hearing about all of the incredible things other Luminaries do! This community has become something that inspires me to look beyond what I think I know and try to do the impossible. So many of us have accomplished so much already that I can’t wait to see what we do in the future!
