“Look at things with different perspectives.” Meet Beedie Luminary Santiago López-Gottberg
What is your field of study and why does it interest you?
I’ve always been very curious about the questions/problems in science that either make no sense or there is no answer to which is the reason why I’ve decided to study physics and astronomy. In this field, there are many such problems about the nature of our universe.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is to really look at things with different perspectives. Although it sounds kind of obvious, I was shocked when I realized how often avoidable arguments happen due to the parties involved being unable to perceive the other’s point of view. It is easy to think you understand things from someone else’s perspective when in reality you’ve kind of just put yourself in their shoes while still looking at things from your perspective. Really trying to look at things from different perspectives has not only helped me avoid misunderstandings, but it has also helped me learn more, become more motivated towards completing my goals, and connect with people more.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
Perspective is everything
What was the last experience that made you a better person?
I found out one of my friends was going through something and I was shocked because he is usually really happy and never seems down. I realized that asking people how they’re really doing from time to time is a good thing to do and that anyone could be going through something.
What is something you learned in the last week?
Really random but I learned that, in math, there will always be true statements that cannot be proven and I think that is interesting.
What’s the coolest trend you see today?
I think one of the coolest trends I see today is how the 80s sound is slowly making a comeback in modern music. I really like that sound and hearing it incorporated into modern music is really cool.
Who inspires you and why?
Definitely 100% my dad. He has worked so hard and sacrificed so much for me and for us to come to Canada while always keeping a positive outlook on things even during hard times.
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
I like to compose music.
What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?
My favourite part of being a part of Beedie Luminaries is the fact that you don’t just get funding for your education, but you are also part of a community that helps each other out and has many resources available for when you need help with anything. For example, the mentorship program.
