Tessa Brown Jones from Cohort 2020 has been busy pursuing a degree in Geography from the University of Victoria, amidst her many other interests and hobbies. Get to know Tessa a little bit better below.
What is your field of study and why does it interest you?
Geography. I love that there are so many different perspectives to explore, and that it’s intertwined with sustainability, social justice, culture, science, politics… and the occasional dumpster dive.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Stressing out about something has no impact on its outcome! If something’s in your control, face it head-on, but if it’s not, worrying is a waste of your time. (Still trying to learn this one).
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
Me and my 800,000 interests.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.
What was the last experience that made you a better person?
Learning healthy communication skills in the peer group training!
What is something you learned in the last week?
Listening to other people’s music recommendations is a great way to get to know someone.
What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?
I love that people are willing to have real, empathetic conversations with each other. It’s so important to learn about others with no judgement and an open mind.
Who inspires you and why?
Anyone who just does what they want to do, without worrying what other people will think.
What would people be surprised to find out about you?
95% of the clothes I own are second-hand.
What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?
Everyone has such unique experiences and perspectives, so I feel like I’m constantly learning and growing. I’m so grateful to the community for being an endless wealth of wisdom, support, friendship… and cute animal pictures! It may just be a four-year program, but the knowledge and connections I have already gained are here to stay.
