BEEDIE LUMINARIES — Being awarded a Beedie Luminary Scholarship in 2023, Diane Valencia used it to help fund her participation in Douglas College’s three-week-long Italy Field School Program. It was full of excitement since it was her first time travelling alone. She explains that the lessons deepened her appreciation of the country’s art, history, politics, and language without taking away the fun. She made memories in Florence, Padua, Siena, Pisa, Venice, and Elba as she rode trains through beautiful Tuscan regions, walked through the narrow streets surrounded by impressive architecture, and savoured every pasta dish. With new lifelong friends and a greater understanding of other cultures, Diane left Italy feeling more confident. She ends by encouraging anyone else to participate in a study abroad experience because the knowledge you gain from pushing your boundaries is priceless.
The Decision to “Go”
Diane always harbored a strong desire to study abroad, which led her to participate in Douglas College’s Italy Field School program.
