A Pitt Meadows student is heading to university without the burden of taking on thousands of dollars of debt as the recipient of a prestigious scholarship.
Pitt Meadows Secondary student Jett Lorenson was one of several B.C. high schoolers to receive a Beedie Luminaries scholarship this year, with each award consisting of up to $44,000 for undergraduate studies and $50,000 for graduate studies.
Offered through B.C. developer Ryan Beedie’s charity, these scholarships will help Lorenson and 166 other students throughout the province achieve a post-secondary education without being launched into significant debt.
“Receiving a Beedie Luminaries scholarship has changed the course of my life,” said Lorenson.
“I will be attending the university of my choice [SFU] and pursuing my academic goals without debt. I don’t think there could be a better way to start my post-secondary journey, and I am forever grateful to Ryan Beedie and his team for seeing my potential and making my dreams possible.”
Beedie said it inspires him to see so many B.C. students be able to go off to their dream college or university.
“I feel strongly that cost should not be a barrier to education,” said Beedie. “That’s why we are trying to level the playing field and provide more students facing barriers with opportunities to reach new heights that may seem otherwise impossible.”
As one of the latest recipients of this scholarship, Lorenson encourages other future students to apply for it as well.
“Applying for the Beedie Luminaries Scholarship is the best decision I’ve made,” said Lorenson. “Sometimes it is important to be bold and take a leap of faith.”
