WHAT IS REAL?

Real is a leadership journey built around the skills that help people stay connected when conversations get difficult. Participants practise listening with curiosity, naming what is happening beneath the surface, and leading with greater hoensty, care, and accountability.

When Ryan founded the Beedie Luminaries Scholarship Foundation in 2018, he envisioned peer to peer support groups for students to support each other in their success.

STEP #1: REAL FOUNDATIONS

A three-day experience exclusive to the Beedie Luminaries community.
During this time, you will uncover personal strengths and learn to give and receive meaningful feedback from your peers. Upon completion, you will be practiced in perspective-taking & relational leadership.

STEP #2: REAL TEAMS

A small, committed community within the Beedie Luminaries program, meeting throughout the semester to support and hold each other accountable.
Over the course of the semester, you will choose a goal that matters most to you — social, personal, or academic — and explore it alongside 6-10 fellow Luminaries. Together we, engage with additional activities and models that deepen personal and social awareness. You will navigate challenges as they arise, using team meetings as a space to share openly and ask for feedback from peers who understand the journey.

STEP #3: REAL RETREAT

REAL Retreat is a chance for students who have been active in their REAL teams to step out of the usual routine, spend real time with each other, and go deeper on the connections you’ve been building. REAL teams are small, committed communities within the Beedie Luminaries program. Each one is a space where students support each other and hold each other accountable.

STEP #1: REAL FOUNDATIONS

Over the course of the three days, you will improve your communication and relationship-building skills while learning to navigate challenging conversations with curiosity & openness. Together, we explore models that look at managing stress and external pressure. You will develop a deeper awareness of group dynamics and emotional literacy.

During this time, you will uncover personal strengths and learn to give and receive meaningful feedback from your peers. Upon completion, you will be practiced in perspective-taking & relational leadership.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

What happens in real foundations

Over three days, you’ll strengthen communication, relationship-building, emotional literacy, and perspective-taking while learning to navigate challenging conversations, manage stress, understand group dynamics, and give and receive meaningful feedback.

INTRO TO REAL COMMUNITY

Our opening session sets the tone for an engaging and meaningful experience. We collaboratively establish community guidelines that shape a respectful, supportive space. Through structured icebreakers, students connect with one another and begin building trust. The session concludes with a guided discussion where participants identify the topics, challenges, and successes most relevant to their relationships and personal lives—helping to shape the direction of future conversations.
