In hopes of pursuing a career in health care, Beedie Luminary Julia Farrell is studying Nursing at Langara. Learn more about Julia here.

What program will you be taking in post-secondary and why does it interest you?

I will be in the Nursing program working towards a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. I have decided to pursue further education in the nursing field as health care and helping people have always been passions of mine.

Tell us a little bit about your background (growing up, going to school, extra-curricular activities, etc.).

Throughout school, academic success has always been my top priority. Still, I have always set aside time for other interests as well. I started playing hockey in high school which started out as a great challenge, but became a big part of my life. It eventually became something that brought me so much joy. I became very involved with the team, becoming assistant captain, running practices and helping recruit new players. Alongside sports, my passion for health care led me to one of my major volunteer efforts at the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre. Volunteering at the MMRC has given me the opportunity to provide hands on medical care, giving me the sense of complete wholeness I had never before felt. This led me to choose to pursue a career in nursing.

Who inspires you, and why?

I am most inspired by a hockey coach I had. From my very first practice to my last game, he always made everyone feel welcome and as if we could achieve anything with some hard work.

What motivates you, and why?

I am motivated by knowing that hard work leads to success and allows me to reach my goals. Knowing that I am working towards something important to me makes all the small steps feel more important.

What are your goals for the upcoming school year?

My goal for the upcoming year is to attain academic success, while still setting aside time for other interests and hobbies.

What is one thing you will take with you to post-secondary that you learned in high school?

I have learned that time management and prioritizing tasks most important to your success are what carry you closer towards your goals.

What is one piece of advice you would give to future Luminaries?

Put in the hard work even when it feels hard because that effort is what allows you to achieve your goals.
