Masood Yousuf, a Beedie Luminary studying Electrical Engineering at UBC-Okanagan, is passionate about new technologies and their applications, valuing creativity alongside practicality. Guided by the mantra “Love what you do, do what you love,” Masood approaches life and challenges with motivation and a focus on long-term growth. Inspired by figures like Obi-Wan Kenobi and the principle of karma, he believes in helping others and fostering meaningful connections through mentorship and collaboration.

What is your field of study and why does it interest you?

I study Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan Campus. As someone that is extremely interested in new technologies and their applications, I found that an engineering degree was perfect for me. This is because it lets me challenge myself with a heavy course load without compromising any spontaneous creativity. Additionally, its versatility and practicality is second to none in both professional and casual situations.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

“Love what you do, do what you love.” This is one piece of advice that has added the most value to my life. Adhering to its message allows me to essentially hack motivation and considerably delay burning out, even in situations of incertitude.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

Living small, Dreaming big

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

“Those who travel fast, travel alone. Those who travel far travel with friends.” Find the right group of friends that fosters growth and maturity!

What was the last experience that made you a better person?

Moving out is an event that forced me to re-evaluate all of the things I used to take for granted. It gave me a better feel for adulthood and an appreciation for my family, especially mom.

What is something you learned in the last week?

Go out of your way to help others, even if it’s just well timed advice. Karma is real.

What’s the coolest trend you see today?

I find IOT ( Internet of Things) to be one of the coolest trends I have ever encountered. The seamless integration of different technologies and machinery that results in a loop without a human operator is the future of technology.

Who inspires you and why?

As a Star Wars fan, I find Obi wan Kenobi extremely inspiring. During his story, he loses his Master, his love, and essentially everything else of value to him and even then he persists and lives on with a smile.

What would people be surprised to find out about you?

I like horror and comedy equally.

What is your favourite thing about being a part of Beedie Luminaries?

The mentorship program. It is extremely helpful in helping us define our future by making progress on our big picture objectives.
