What’s Terry Lin’s best piece of advice? “Just try your best at what you love, good things will eventually happen!” First year UBC student Terry is excited to discover the depths of his passions for biotechnology through his pursuit of a Bachelor of Science. Read more below about this Beedie Luminary!

What post-secondary school will you be attending?

University of British Columbia

What program will you be taking in post-secondary and why does it interest you?

Science Program. I am passionate about new technologies and health sciences. I hope to pursue a career related to the field of biotechnology.

Tell us a little bit about your background (growing up, going to school, extra-curricular activities, etc.).

I was born and raised in Taiwan. I speak fluent Mandarin and Taiwanese; after moving to Canada in 2016, I gradually improved my English skills. I’m interested in almost everything imaginable. I play tennis and ping pong, enjoy chess, and recently fell in love with songwriting after years of teaching myself guitar. I’ve sung in a choir both before and after moving to Canada. Plus, I’m an enthusiastic language learner and am currently mastering Japanese as my fourth language.

Who inspires you, and why?

Terry Fox is definitely my inspiration. The quote on the wall of my school and Terry Fox Secondary reads: “I want to try the impossible to show that it can be done”. He showed me that no matter how hard the circumstances are beating me down, I should never give up.

What motivates you, and why?

The ultimate goal of medical science and technology is to improve the life of humans. Pursuing a career I like while being able to achieve this goal of helping others is the motivation that drives me forward.

What are your goals for the upcoming school year?

I hope to keep up with my studies while having a balanced life style, as I enjoy a lot more activities other than studying. Therefore, my goal is to maintain a good GPA so I can get into the major I want, without giving up on my hobbies.

What is one thing you learned in high school that you will bring with you to post-secondary?

I actively participated in community service and various activities in high school, and I hope to continue that involvement in university.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to future Luminaries?

Don’t let anything stop you from pursuing excellence. Just try your best at what you love, good things will eventually happen!
