Abbotsford News Repost: 10 Abbotsford students receive Beedie Luminaries scholarships
Ten Grade 12 Abbotsford students have been named recipients of scholarships from the Beedie Luminaries Foundation.
The students are among 310 recipients from 34 communities across the province who received a total of more than $13 million.
Scholarships are awarded in six categories:
• SHINE (Soaring Higher IN Education);
• RISE (Refugee and Immigrant Student Education);
• SPARK (Single Parent Award for Resilience and Knowledge);
• a graduate studies stream for those who have obtained their undergraduate degree with support from Luminaries;
• BUILD for those pursuing skilled trades; and
• the new family practice medical degree scholarship.
Recipients received scholarships of up to $44,000 for undergraduate studies, $50,000 for graduate studies and $20,000 for skilled trades.
They also receive services such as mentorship, student success advising, workshops and peer support.
Six of the Abbotsford students are receiving SHINE scholarships:
• Cassidy Lowe of Abbotsford Senior Secondary;
• Jasraj Brar, Rick Hansen Secondary;
• Makanaka Gwarinda, Yale Secondary;
• Shan-e Ahmad Naqvi – Robert Bateman Secondary;
• Charlie Tran, Robert Bateman Secondary; and
• Lashee Kanyumwa, Abbotsford Senior Secondary.
The other four are receiving RISE scholarships: Nabi Hagos, Abigail Ganisekale, Nyamani Gabriel Gatriay Nyuol and
Soraya Radsikh.
Beedie Luminaries launched in November 2018 with a $50 million donation from Ryan Beedie that coincided with his 50th birthday.
There program offers support to students applying to B.C. post-secondary institutions, including universities, colleges and trad schools.
To date, the program has awarded approximately $59 million in scholarships to more than 1,300 students.
