Work Title / Company:
Director, Design | Beedie
Why did you decide to become a mentor with Beedie Luminaries?
Growing up as a first generation Canadian, I didn’t have the benefit of a local network I could draw from for career mentorship. My mentorship came in the form of a repeat customer at the coffee shop I worked at, who was my sounding board for a lot of my career aspirations. Little does he know the tremendous impact he made in my life over late-night coffee! I love how Beedie Luminaries has provided an opportunity to contribute back in a consistent way.
What was your first job? What was your biggest takeaway from that experience?
A host at Red Robin’s. Often this position is overlooked, but it’s the heart of a restaurant’s operation and guest experience. Learning how to prioritize, shift gears, manage overall flow, resources, and “quarter-backing” information were all huge take-aways for me, and not to mention my love for their fries! For those Beedie Luminaries who are participating in volunteer work, summer internships or part-time jobs, I encourage you to look at your position from a macro level and understand what skills you are polishing in this very moment. Every opportunity supplements your future ‘tool box’ of skills.
What are the three qualities that got you where you are today?
- Knowing my audience
- Sharing failures with team members and learning from each other’s mistakes
- Having a proactive mindset
What advice would you give to post-secondary students as they prepare to transition into the working world?
Be a “yes” person to opportunities that arise. If the opportunity seems overwhelming, create a plan to break it down into achievable bite-size pieces to get yourself to the finish line. Sometimes tasks that seem lack-luster can be great opportunities for professional development.
What / where is your happy place?
Anywhere there is water! Whether it’s jumping through the sprinkler with my 1.5 year old daughter, sitting oceanside, or swimming under a waterfall!
